The rules for using Backseat, in plain words. These are the same terms you see in the app.

Keep it about the ride, not the riders.
Backseat is for sharing the vibe of your journey, not calling out, describing or making assumptions about other passengers.

Please focus on what's happening and how it affects the ride rather than criticising or singling out other people. Posts that target passengers or include details that could make them identifiable will be removed.

By using Backseat, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

What is Backseat?

Backseat is a free, small community app for sharing transport experiences and feedback. We're a simple platform where people can comment about their bus, train, or ferry journeys.

Community Guidelines

Keep it about transport. Don't be a jerk. Simple as that.

Comments should be about your transport experience
No personal attacks, harassment, or inappropriate content
No sharing of personal information - your own or others'
No spam, advertising, or off-topic content
Report bad behaviour when you see it

Comments will be checked against a word filter before they are posted. Some comments won't post, and some are held for a person to review first.

We may hide a comment, and limit or block posting from a device that breaks these rules, without notice. Backseat has no accounts, so a device is what we can limit.

Our Liability

As a small community app, we take no liability for anything said or done on this app, and you use it at your own discretion. We're not responsible for user comments, content, or any consequences of using the app. You own the content you post. By posting, you give us a licence to display it in Backseat and use it to keep the community running (like in moderation, troubleshooting, or promoting the app).

We take no responsibility for any losses, delays, costs, missed trips, wrong direction, data loss, device issues or other problems that may occur from using information provided by Backseat. We take no responsibility for the accuracy of data shown. If in doubt, always check official sources.

Privacy

Backseat collects a small amount of information when you use the app:

Your comment (so others can read it).
Device/browser info (to help us fix bugs and improve the app).
Location, but only if you allow it. We don't store exact GPS coordinates - just the name of the area or suburb you post from
Basic analytics (to understand how people use Backseat) so we can continue to make improvements

We do not store any personal information including IP addresses. We don't sell your data. We only use this info to keep the app working, improve the service, and make moderation possible.

If you want us to remove your post, please report it with reason other and let us know why.

To help stop spam and enforce these rules, your browser keeps a random code, and we store a scrambled version of it with your comments. It can't be used to work out who you are.

Changes to Terms

We retain the right to change these terms of use at any point. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know, but continued use means you accept the updated terms.

New Zealand Law

These terms are governed by New Zealand law.
